Bulk Tequila Sourcing & Procurement from a Trusted Global Partner

Are you looking for a tequila supplier? We will guide you through the process.

Tequila has continued to demonstrate remarkable resilience, maintaining strong global demand across both established and emerging markets. Evolving into a category celebrated for its craftmanship and cultural heritage. Today, tequila is used in everything from premium sipping expressions and cocktails to innovative ready-to-drink (RTD) products.

Understanding tequila’s legal classifications is essential for businesses looking to source commercially as they impact how tequila can be exported, handled and bottled. 100% Agave Tequila is produced solely from the Blue Weber Agave, bottled in Mexico and certified by the CRT. The second classification is Tequila, commonly referred to within the trade (but not on the label) as ‘Mixto’. Produced using a fermentation base of at least 51% Blue Weber Agave sugars, with the remaining permitted sugars from other sources. Mixto tequila can be exported in bulk and bottled outside Mexico. This makes it the principal category used for international bulk tequila projects.

Only tequila produced within designated regions of Mexico and certified in accordance with the Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM) can legally bear the name tequila. Businesses looking to import, bottle or distribute tequila must also comply with requirements established by the CRT, the organisation responsible for safeguarding the authenticity and quality standards of tequila production.

Navigating these requirements can be complex, particularly for businesses importing tequila for the first time. Ethimex has extensive experience supporting international tequila projects, we help customers navigate the procurement process from initial enquiry through to logistics and final delivery.

Ethimex’s agave expertise extends beyond tequila, with a diverse portfolio of agave spirits. Discover our Bulk Agave Spirits here.

Blue Webber agave being harvested for tequila production

Tequila Blanco Mixto is an unaged, clear tequila made from a mix of at least 51% blue agave sugars and up to 49% other sugars. This type of tequila is typically bottled immediately after distillation or after a short resting period in stainless steel tanks.

Tequila Oro, also known as Gold Tequila, is typically a mixto tequila that is unaged or slightly aged and often has a caramel colour or other flavourings added to give it a golden hue. It is made from a minimum of 51% blue agave sugars, with the remainder coming from other sugars.

This tequila is made entirely from blue agave and is often produced in small batches by artisanal distilleries. It is distilled and bottled within the designated tequila-producing regions of Mexico, ensuring authenticity and adherence to traditional production methods.

Source Tequila in Bulk

Looking for a Bulk Tequila Supplier?

At Ethimex, we source and facilitate bulk tequila supply for multinational drinks companies, independent bottlers, private label brands and craft distillers worldwide.

We’ve been active in Mexico for over 25 years, with trusted long-term production partners to deliver CRT-certified tequila for your requirements.

How to Import Bulk Tequila?

Importing bulk tequila involves more than arranging transport from Mexico. As a protected Denomination of Origin spirit, tequila is subject to specific regulatory requirements designed to protect its authenticity and traceability throughout the supply chain.

Depending on your business model, you may need to establish formal agreements with the tequila producer and relevant Mexican authorities. This can include registration processes, trademark documentation, alcohol permits, and commitments to comply with the Tequila Regulatory Standard (NOM-006-SCFI). Additional requirements may apply if a third-party bottler receives and processes the tequila.

The registration and approval process should officially take around 8 weeks to be approved and registered by the Mexican authorities. While approval times vary, authorisation of the required agreements can regularly take 4 to 5 months, and, in some cases, up to 9 months, so it is important to factor this into your project timeline.

With over 25 years of working in Mexico, Ethimex can guide customers through the process and help coordinate with trusted production partners to ensure the correct documentation is in place from the outset.
